Hopefully, you have not been significantly affected in this particular area. Regardless, Barb has had major issues on the speech front. She has been afflicted with extreme Apraxia and Aphasia (meaning speech motor function and language skills are affected).
For Barb and her family this has been the most difficult to deal with. Barb’s initial prognosis was extremely poor. She was fortunate to have a good speech therapist, well versed in Apraxia and Aphasia. Regardless, rehab progress was minimal. Only Barb’s tenacity and her family’s creativity to use various methods that are a bit outside the box have given new hope.
Barb’s husband Bruce and their daughter, Britt, developed a speech program that was applicable to Barb’s life. This was developed primarily through Power-Point presentations that had pictures, words and phrases that Barb could identify along with an Object Kit (many household items i.e. spoon, scissors, pencil etc.).
Family support, and again, Barb’s commitment to the process/program has turned a dim speech prognosis into a bright one for the future.
